Dildo Material Guide

After browsing our site, you’re likely aware that dildos are available in various shapes, sizes, and styles. However, the variety of materials can also be overwhelming, especially without specialised knowledge.

Choosing the appropriate dildo material is often based on personal preference. To assist you in making an informed decision, we’ve outlined the most common types below, along with explanations to guide you in the right direction.

PVC
PVC stands as one of the oldest materials used in modern sex toys and is renowned for its versatility. It is commonly found in a variety of products, including dildos, vibrators, butt plugs, and fetish-wear clothing. One of the key reasons for its enduring popularity is its ability to create dildos with different firmness levels.

Despite concerns raised online regarding PVC sex toys potentially containing phthalates (more on this later), the adult industry has made significant strides over the past decade. Manufacturers have worked diligently to replace phthalates with alternative softeners, ensuring the dildo retains a lifelike feel. Committed to adhering to EU regulation REACH, we exclusively supply PVC dildos that are phthalate-free, and this commitment remains unwavering.

LATEX
Latex, a naturally occurring liquid derived from trees, finds use in various manufacturing processes to create a wide range of products. You may recognise latex in items such as clothing, mainly fetish wear, as well as condoms. While less prevalent, latex is also utilised in the production of dildos.

Before incorporating a latex dildo into your play, it’s crucial to ascertain whether you have any latex allergies. Despite being deemed safe for bodily use; latex allergies are not uncommon and can result in adverse reactions such as rashes or sores for some individuals. Should you experience any discomfort while using a latex dildo or any other latex sex toy, discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice.

TPE/TPR (THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMER OR THERMOPLASTIC RUBBER)
TPE/TPR stands out as one of the top choices for dildo materials available today. Dildos crafted from TPE/TPR are renowned for their remarkable realism, flexibility, and comfort. Notably, they are entirely body-safe, as they do not require phthalates or softeners to achieve their lifelike feel. A significant portion of our dildo collection is crafted from this material, offering a wide selection for our customers. Additionally, TPE/TPR dildos are relatively affordable, allowing you to acquire ultra-lifelike options at a modest cost.

ABS
Constructed from firm plastic, this material offers minimal flexibility. It excels in targeting precise spots that may pose challenges for other toys, such as the g-spot or p-spot. ABS plastic sex toys boast complete body safety and durability due to their robust composition. Additionally, they are effortless to clean with warm, soapy water, ensuring convenience in maintenance.

SILICONE
Silicone sex toys are widely regarded as the premier choice among sex toy materials. However, it’s important to note the distinction between standard and medical-grade silicone. While dildos crafted from silicone can technically contain as little as 10% and still be labelled as such, medical-grade silicone dildos require a much higher silicone content, typically at least 70% or more.

Regardless of the silicone content, these toys offer a luxurious feel known for their softness and comfort. However, it’s worth mentioning that silicone toys often come with a higher price tag due to their quality.

In addition to their plush texture, silicone dildos are highly regarded for their body safety. Their nonporous nature ensures hygienic use and is incredibly easy to clean with warm, soapy water. After washing, allow them to air dry for optimal maintenance.

PU-COATING
The Polyurethane coating (PU-Coating) process entails spraying liquid PU onto the base of a dildo, typically constructed from a rigid material like ABS. This coating effectively renders the toy softer and enhances its comfort during use.

GLASS
Many glass dildos are crafted from borosilicate glass, renowned for its exceptional toughness and shatterproof properties. This material is ideal for a variety of items, including dildos, butt plugs, and even Pyrex jugs! Sex toys made from borosilicate glass are considered safe due to their resistance to shattering or breaking easily. While it is conceivable that dropping the toy from a height onto a hard surface could cause damage, it typically results in large chunks breaking off rather than shattering into small pieces. In the event of such damage occurring, it is essential not to attempt to use the glass dildo again for safety reasons.

Although rare, it’s worth noting that glass dildos are among the most durable sex toys you’ll ever own. Not only are they visually appealing, but they’re also simple to lubricate and clean. Additionally, they offer versatility for temperature play, allowing you to enhance sensations by heating or cooling the dildo as desired.

METAL
Metal dildos are straightforward: they’re tough, heavy, and unyielding. Unlike other materials, you won’t find a metal dildo bending to your whims. They’re also among the most accessible dildo materials to clean, and you won’t encounter issues with them breaking down over time. A metal dildo is a lifelong investment!

WOOD
While rare, it is indeed possible to acquire wooden dildos. These items often come at a slightly higher price point due to the difficulty in mass production, but they offer a unique, bespoke appeal. Rest assured, you won’t encounter any splinters with these dildos as they are meticulously smoothed and coated to render them nonporous. This makes them incredibly safe to use, as bacteria cannot proliferate on their surface if not properly cleaned. However, it’s still essential to clean all dildos after use; wooden ones are no exception. Fortunately, they are just as easy to wash and reuse as their counterparts made from other materials.

CERAMIC
While relatively uncommon, bespoke hand-crafted pottery dildos, or ceramic dildos, are available for purchase. Due to their limited availability and the labour-intensive nature of their production, these dildos often command a higher price. Ceramic dildos are notably heavier than their traditional counterparts, and you should take extra care to avoid dropping them. Despite their rigidity, they are easy to lubricate and offer a smooth finish, allowing for effortless penetration.

NOTE: PHTHALATES
In the early days of mass-produced sex toys, it was common to find phthalates used in dildos to enhance their softness and realism. However, as research progressed, concerns arose regarding the safety of phthalates in various products, prompting regulatory action to ban their use in manufacturing processes.

In response to these concerns, sex toy manufacturers have innovated alternative softeners over the past decade. These alternatives offer the same lifelike feel while ensuring the toy’s safety for bodily use.

STORAGE
The importance of proper sex toy storage is often overlooked, understandably so. From the excitement of shopping for and receiving your new dildo to the climax of using it, it’s easy to forget what comes next.

After the fun is over, it’s crucial to clean your dildo with warm, soapy water and let it air dry. But what about afterwards?

To ensure your beloved toy remains intact and undamaged, it’s essential to store all your sex toys separately, preferably in a storage bag. Avoid allowing them to touch each other, which can cause materials to react unfavourably. For optimal results, store each dildo individually in a cool, dry, and dark place, ready for your next indulgence.
